The Variscan orogeny was a mountain-building event that gave rise to Cornwall, along with other mountain features across Europe. This was caused when the ancient continents of Euramerica and Gondwana collided to from the supercontinent of Pangaea. The granite that rose towards the surface under what is now Cornwall distilled many elements from deep in the earth into the existing ('country') rock in the margins around the granite.
It was these areas that would very much later be mined for their wealth.
